Matteo Calafatti, MD

Pediatric Resident, Integrated Research Pathway

Matteo is a pediatric resident in the Boston Combined Residency Program, originally from Rome, Italy. He earned his MD from Sapienza University of Rome, where his research focused on the role of neuro-inflammation in the pathophysiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, as well as immune-based therapeutic strategies to enhance neuroprotection. He later completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Maris Lab at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he studied mechanisms of chemoresistance in high-risk neuroblastoma persister cells, with a particular emphasis on targeting Bcl-xL using PROTAC technology. At Dana-Farber, his current work centers on defining antigen density–dependent activation and leakiness thresholds for next-generation CAR T cells, with the broader aim of advancing CAR T biology and developing more effective, less toxic therapies for pediatric cancers. Outside of his professional pursuits, Matteo enjoys swimming, running, traveling, and spending time with his family.
